Founded in 1980 as the Sri Lanka Sports Club - renamed Lions Sports Club in 2025. Same club, same people, playing on.
Forty-Five Years in the Making
Club Founded
A group of cricket-loving Sri Lankan expatriates in Wellington entered the Wellington Cricket Association's 1-Day B Grade competition as the Sri Lanka Sports Club, fielding two teams from day one. Wicket-keeper batsman Rohan Mendis captained the inaugural eleven, training twice weekly at the University grounds in Kelburn - miss a session and you missed your place in the side.
B Grade Champions
Just two seasons in, the club won the B Grade title. Wasantha Muthumala's 98 that season stood as the club's highest score until Riza brought up its first century a few years later.
First Century, Records With the Ball
Riza scored the club's first century. Around the same era, Ajith Fernando returned career-best figures of 9 for 34 - and after an opening batsman was struck in the face, the club became one of the first in the lower grades to make helmets standard for its batsmen.
Renamed Lions Sports Club
The club took on its current name and crest, Lions Sports Club - same club, same people, new era. Long-serving members like Dr. Nihal Gonsalkorale have watched that journey since the very first Kelburn training nights.
